Child’s Story

Asiel Williams

Diagnosis: Neuroblastoma

Asiel was diagnosed with Stage 4, High-Risk, Neuroblastoma on January 7, 2019 just weeks after his 3rd birthday. Out of the blue, a golf ball sized lump appeared on his neck. Doctors first thought it was strep throat in the lymph nodes – since he tested positive for strep (with no other symptoms). After antibiotics didn’t do anything to the lump, we went to an ENT and he suggested another round of stronger antibiotics. I strongly said, “no, I’d rather we do a scan to see what this is.”

4 days later, sitting in a little hospital room after a CT scan, we heard the words, “they think he has a childhood cancer.” Our lives were forever changed that day. He had 6 rounds of chemotherapy, 2 bone marrow stem cell transplants, 12 rounds of radiation, and 5 rounds of immunotherapy. Asiel spent over 150 nights at Primary Children’s over the course of 18 months.

He is almost 5 years NED (no evidence of disease). He has high-frequency hearing loss due to chemotherapy requiring hearing aids. He has hypothyroidism due to radiation to the neck area. We say cancer is the gift that keeps on giving. Despite this, we are so grateful he is still here with us and mourn for the friends we have lost along the way.
