Child’s Dream Trip
Ali Herbert
Diagnosis: Leukemia
We met Nixon in 2018 when Ali had relapsed the first time. We saw him and his mom walking through the halls on the fourth floor. Ali always loved to meet new friends and she thought this new boy was cute! I will always remember his sweet smile and how kind he was to Ali. I loved watching him and his mom throw the baseball back and forth to each other and how encouraging Janessa always was.
Their kindness continued, even after they had to go through the unthinkable. We were devastated when Nixon passed. Especially Ali. She loved him as he was her friend.
In January 2020, we had just learned Ali (9) relapsed for the fifth time. She had been battling leukemia since 2015. We knew medically we were running out of options and were grasping at any trial drugs that were available. Ali qualified for a trial of CAR-T therapy. This trial took place in California and our family lived in Utah. Ali would be 1 of 10 kids participating in hopes for it to work. This would be what seemed like the millionth time we would be pulled away from each other while we tried to find a cure.
After finding out Ali didn’t have much time left, Nixonstrong reached out asking if they could whisk us away on a vacation to fulfill some of Ali’s dreams.
They flew our whole family of eight to California, where we got to go to Disneyland, the beach, and sea world where Ali got to ride a dolphin!!! It was magic!!
Ali passed away 10 months after our trip. You’ll never know how much these memories mean to me. Seeing Ali happy. Being able to forget your worries and just be!! It is a gift that is absolutely priceless and truly treasured.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen for us. I’ll forever be grateful. I love you Nixonstrong.
Love,
Heather
